Things I’ve learned about Texas in my 72 hours of residency.

  • I can’t casually throw “ya’ll” into a conversation without sounding like a fool.
  • Texans may walk slow and talk slow, but they drive like f-bomb maniacs. I fear for my life on the way to The Heb.
  • It’s not called The Heb. It’s H.E.B. People will laugh at you if you say it wrong.
  • When you order a “Coke” the waitress doesn’t ask “what kind.” She will ask if you’d prefer a Dr. Pepper.
  • The left lane is not for left turns. It’s for U-turns. Which comes in extremely handy when I’m being tailgated so fiercely that I can’t slow down to make the previous exit.
  • Homeslice Pizza isn’t open on Tuesdays, which is all kinds of bullshit.
  • Weed really must be available in abundance at UT since I was mistaken for a college student at the bookstore.

This made me giggle. I have never been there.

    Don’t worry… the “y’all” thing will come.

I always thought that, if I moved down South, I would resist adopting the accent or, um, charming colloquialisms. The idea being that chicks dig guys with foreign accents, and you don’t get much more foreign than Chicago. ;)

Michael – My mom said that our Chicago accent is much too strong to turn Southern anytime soon. I think she’s right – that ‘ya’ll’ just doesn’t roll off the tongue.

Tx is a whole ‘nother continent from the US…. You’ve only been here 72 hrs, so you probably haven’t had time to notice how many women will not go out EVER without full make up and hair styling. the abundance of the color pink here, and the boatload of cosmetic surgery places for body, face and teeth….. They automatically assume you want your teeth bleached blindingly white when you go to the regular dentist here. Or at the least that you want veneers.
Welcome to TX from another Midwestern Girl!

Deborah – I’ve totally noticed all the teeth whitening places! They seem to be in every strip mall.

Oh my gosh! I am laughing hysterically! Driving in TX is the scariest thing I’ve ever done and I’ve driven in NY city! Texans are extremely friendly people, until you put them behind the wheel of a vehicle!

    Another Austin thing:

Go out now and purchase flip-flops in every color needed to go with your wardrobe. Be sure to have a variety of casual ones and dressy ones for date night. Anytime it’s above 60 degrees outside, you are expected to have them ready. :)

haha beware…they also have a thing for mustard here in TX. Sometimes they’ll say, you want it with mustard all the way? other times you’ll just get it with mustard. So if you prefer ketchup or anything else, you should probably be specific. :P especially at whatabuger! :)

Thanks for the warning – not a big mustard fan.

I’m so excited that you’re in Austin. It really is a great town. I know I keep saying this (mostly on twitter). My mom has shopped at HEB since I was a wee tot. I think she goes there at least once a day and should have stock (she’s in N. Austin).

I’ve totally ditched Super Target for HEB. Your mom and I should go grocery shopping together. LOL

have you noticed that anything that takes longer than 10 minutes to drive to is “really far”?

YES! I interviewed for a job today and one of the top reasons they called me in for an interview is because I live on the south side and they are located on the south side. I’m used to driving over an hour each way! No one down here commutes!

Homeslice opened a place next door that’s open Tuesdays. Hooray!

Yeah! I saw them Twitter that their new to-go window was open!

lol I ur Texas post! :) Deborah she is in Austin, not Dallas. I believe Austin is much more relaxed. As far as crazy Texas traffic, I believe Houston has all Tx cities beat. If you live in Austin, you simply learn to avoid high traffic times at all costs if possible. Also, ‘The HEB’ has various grades, my fav is on Parmer and i35.

I thought I had seen it all driving in Chicago and NYC, but Texas drivers will run your ass over!

I have noticed that rush-hour starts later in the morning and lasts a lot longer in the evening in Austin than it does in Chicago.

And we have a fancy smancy HEB on W Slaughter and Mopac – I was impressed.
