Oh hey, what's up?

The dangers of being married to a paramedic

You’ve probably heard on the news that there is now a confirmed case of swine flu in Illinois as well as one in Indiana. My husband is a paramedic and his ambulance is at nearly every hospital in the Northwest Indiana and Northeast Illinois on a daily basis.

Are we picking up on a potential problem here?

I’m at an elevated risk for swine flu! Being a medical professional, my husband first in line to get the vaccine and any medical attention necessary, so I’m not worried about him. I’m the one washing his dirty work clothes, full of sick people germs. I’m the one everyone should be worried about.

I need to buy myself a swine flu kit with respirator masks, safety goggles, coveralls, gloves, and hand sanitizer  just do to the laundry! And quick before the pandemic takes over and they are all sold out!

Can it really be transmitted via dirty laundry? I thought it was airborne.

I would make him strip at the back door, throw his clothes in the washer and then you do not have to handle them. Good luck.

All the US cases have been in line with a normal does of the flu–so not a big worry yet :)

I’ve heard that it’s really not as bad as the media is making it sound – if you wash your hands and take vitamin C and pretty much use your head when it comes to how you feel and when you go to the doctor, you’ll be fine. The only deaths have been in Mexico where they don’t have as good of medical care. I hope you guys stay safe, though!

i was wondering myself if you can catch it from his clothes. from what i’ve heard, it’s contagious from person-to-person contact, such as sneezing and coughing.

Use lots of hand sanitizer as well as washing your hands a lot. Seems like that’s the main thing.

I’d be wearing a mask and gloves, but that’s just me! Be careful, both of you.

Not for nothing, but i am a NYC medic and I do not let my girlfriend whom I live with touch my work clothes. I change my boots before i walk into the house and (shirt if i have a dirty call), i have my own separate laundry basket that I usually spray before and after work. Also, its a great idea to have him wash his clothes by themselves and not mixed with yours.
As far as the swine flu goes its pretty much a mild strain of the flu, hopefully it wont spread or mutate(sp?). Well, good luck :) and take care!

Rich – You’re much more considerate than my husband. Laundry is my job. :-)
