Smitten with Succulents
I am absolutely enchanted by succulents. They don’t even look real they’re so perfect and orderly (and I can keep them alive). I remember my grandma having hen and chicks growing on the rocks in her backyard (but now that I think about it, it was probably my grandpa who put them there since he was responsible for the dahlias and iris’ growing in the yard) and now I have planters of them on all my window sills.
The Austin Cactus and Succulent Society (yes, such a thing exists – isn’t it wonderful?) is having their annual succulent sale at Zilker Botanical Gardens on April 14th and 15th and I am way more excited than is probably necessary.
What do you think? Are you a fan of succulents?

Yes…I love them. Mainly, because you never need to even care for them! We never water any of ours outside. They simply survive on whatever nature provides. I enjoy things that have high impression value but require little effort.

Do you replant every year or are they potted so you can bring them in during the winter?

I love them, too! But, as I seem to kill any green thing that comes into my home I’ve been afraid to try them. Are they really that easy to care for?

Super easy, Kari. The less attention you pay to them, the better.

They are totally low maintenance. I don’t remember seeing them often in NWI, but they’ve got to be at a garden center, right?

My grandma used to have hens and chicks on in her rocks too! Oh that brought back memories. It’s about the only plant I remember the name of

I LOVE, LOVE succulents. It was the hen and chicks that got me interested in the first place. Sadly, I couldn’t keep the ones I had alive so I just admire from a distance now. I can’t bear the thought of them dying if I bring them home.

Hi, Daly! Yes, it may be better to just be an admirer.
Though you’re in the perfect climate for them!

I’m with you. I’m hoping to find something new this weekend at the succulent sale and stick them in some neat little planters and bowls I have.
Marie Bradley
How do you keep them on the board? I have never seen anything so beautiful in the flower dept..Love it Thanks..Marie

From what I can gather, the board must be backed with some kind of foam so that the succulents can take root. I’d love to see the whole process mapped out.
