Run For Your Lives
I was hoping it was all a terrible terrible dream. Then I woke up and saw the confirmation in my inbox.
I really did sign up to run a 5k zombie obstacle course.
Teriffic. Now all I have to do is all I have to do is lose 75 pounds and learn how to outrun zombies before December.
I have no doubt that I’ll finish the race, but the questions become 1.) how long will it take me to finish? and 2.) how much pain will I be in at the end?
I downloaded the C25K app, which I should mention that I failed miserably at when I tried last year, and I’m working on my motivational playlist.
Are you a runner? Do you have any tips for training? Or making sure that zombie’s don’t eat my brains?

This almost makes me want to do that. If only there were one in Chicago! GOOD LUCK! You can do this!

It’s a good excuse to come visit Austin!

You should talk to my sister Tessa! She just did the Diva Dash a few weeks ago – her first race and it was a 5k obstacle course. I don’t know how she did it other than a lot of determination and a pretty steady workout schedule, but I bet she has sage words of advice!!

Oh, I really want to do this!
As far as training, I love Couch to 5K’s app.

Sign up with us! The more people that commit the less likely I am to back out.

When I started doing the c25k, I weighed 255lbs and I was totally sedentary. Like, molded to the couch sedentary. Now I can go 60 minutes without stopping! It’s crazy. I don’t even know who I am. You got this!
Also, I kind of want to sign up to be a zombie…

I’m amazed by everyone that’s completed C25K. The first time I tried it, my legs hurt so bad I couldn’t convince myself it was worth it. I’m sure it hurt so bad because of the weight I’m carrying so I’m going to have to suck it up this time.

Tips for out-running zombies…watch the following movies. I’ve watched and approve all.
I Am Legend (ok, vampires, but close)
Night of the Living Dead (’68 Romero clasic)
28 Days Later (modern version of the zombie tale)
Shaun of the Dead (hilarious!)
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (supposed to be a movie next year! Yay!)
Hmmm. I may know too much on this subject.

I’m a big chicken, so we may have to have a movie night.

I’m totally in for a movie night! I have two of those (Night of the Living Dead and I am Legend). Maybe the next time I can get D out of the house on the weekend and ship Little Man to the grandparents, you can come over. If not, I can always invade you and Ollie. Maybe it’ll give him the chance to warm up to Auntie Megs.

First, lemme say that the 5k looks INSANELY fun. and I HATE running!
I’d say that you should consider holding off a couple months to begin running, and focus on incorporating some high intensity but LOW impact cardio to get your heart ready and used to regular exercise. I have a good friend that is a professional running coach, and he told me that every strike to the ground hits your body with the force of 3x your body weight, so with a high weight, you’re just ASKING to have your legs and joints in massive pain if you jump into it too quickly. I’d start doing some moderate to intense cardio to get your heart ready and to prep your body for running. I’d be happy to recommend some programs I use and enjoy (as I’m pretty sure we are similar sizes/probably comparable weights) that have TOTALLY changed my body’s ability to handle cardio. I do know that C25K is a great program to use. I just think the next couple of months should be about getting your heart and body prepped for the shock of running.

Yes! Please recommend some programs! That was exactly my problem the last time I tried C25K – my feet and shins hurt so bad I could hardly stand it. I actually really like cardio and was going to check out what my local YMCA had going on.

Hey sorry to just now get back to you. I’ve been thinking about what might be a good-fit for you to get into running. Not to be self-serving, but I actually think the workout program that I am doing right now would be a good fit for you. I am doing Beachbody’s TurboJam. It’s cardio kickboxing with a lil bit of booty shaking in the mix. Whats cool about it is it’s totally customizable. There’s a few folks in the video who do “low impact” and the instructor, Chalene Johnson, really encourages to do things at your own pace. When you’re ready for medium to high impact, there’s jumping and running in place to really get your legs ready. You also burn TONS of calories doing it. Like a shocking amount. I did a 40 minute video today and I burned 757 calories during it. You can purchase it though any beach body coach, or you can buy some individual used videos online at amazon. Def look up some videos of it on Youtube if you’re interested. Some other things that might be good are step aerobic classes, running on the elliptical and then transitioning to the treadmill and then outside. Jillian Michael’s 30-day shred video is good too because it’s metabolic training (3 minutes of strength, 2 of cardio, 1 of abs, three times in a row for 20 minutes.) The video really works at building stamina but I’m not joking when I say you’ll be miserably sore through the first week. You just gotta push through it. Lemme know what you think! I’d be happy to help you further! xo
