The world’s tallest woman died this morning. Sandy Allen was only 53 years old, but at 7 feet 7 1/4 inches, had suffered from many medical problems, and had become dependent on a wheel chair in recent years.
In 1974 she reached out to Guiness World Records with a letter that said:
I would like to get to know someone that is approximately my height. It is needless to say my social life is practically nil and perhaps the publicity from your book may brighten my life.
That letter seems so unbelievably sad to me, but friends and family said she was a fabulous lady who made friends easily.
Even though I had heard her story numerous times on television, I had no idea she was a fellow Hoosier. Sandy was from Shelbyville, Indiana, just southeast of Indianapolis.
