Oh hey, what's up?

Never leave your partner…especially after they buy your mom a Rascal.

I added Fireproof to my Netflix queue months ago and viola it showed up last week! Amazing how that works. I basically wanted to watch the movie to poke fun at it, and it didn’t disappoint.

Basically, its the story of a firefighter, Caleb, whose marriage to Katharine is on the rocks. In a half-hearted attempt to earn back his wife’s love before she files for divorce, he begins a 40 day “love challenge” on the recommendation of his father who “found the Lord” and saved his own marriage.

Take a look at the genius…

A few of the highlights for me included…

  • Caleb (Kirk Cameron) taking his computer outside and smashing it with a baseball bat to overcome his urge to prowl porn sites. Excellent choice. I would have just unplugged it.
  • Caleb talking love and faith at the firehouse. My grandfather was a fireman and my husband is a paramedic; I can say with a good deal of confidence that there ain’t no love and faith talk going on at base.
  • Katharine realizing she loves her husband when she finds out he took the $24,000 he was saving for a boat and bought her mother a Rascal.
  • Gavin (the doctor Katharine was “getting to know” at the hospital where she worked) and his wicked overbite.
  • The motto “never leave your partner in a fire,” even if he’s a screaming asshole that looks at porn and beats things with a baseball bat and you’re being wooed by a successful doctor (albeit with an overbite).

I think it’s safe to say that I LOVED this movie and I totally ordered The Love Dare book (from Paper Back Swap -  you didn’t think I was going to pay for it, did you?) and I plan on taking it very seriously and forcing Mike to participate in all 40 days. I might even repeat some of the extra good days, like the one where you buy your wife something to show that you’ve been thinking about her. I think that will totally help us find God and improve our marriage.

A little bit of trivia: Caleb and Katharine embrace and kiss passionately as they reconcile, but dont’ be fooled! The scene is shot in the shadows and Kirk Cameron’s real life wife replaced the actress for the final scene because he refused to kiss any other woman. I think that’s a testament to his acting skills.

You’re mean! Joel was not overexcited about the acting but we saw it together and enjoyed it. I would like to borrow Love Dare when you are done and no I won’t pay full price either :) I heart him and not wanting to kiss any other women!

I can’t say that this is a movie that I want or have ever wanted to see. I think a lot of people have gotten something out of the message behind it, so that is good. It’s just not for me, though.

Carissa – Besides the acting being bad, I know I wouldn’t stick around for 40 days to see if a book could improve my marriage if my husband was that much of an asshole! Haha.

Lynne – I kind of believe that people are what they are and no amount of love dares or church is going to change that.

Julie – I suppose I was a little rough on the movie because it was so hokey, but don’t let me discourage you from seeing it!
