“Love”

Click for big – and behold the “love” in our family.

Where’s Dr. Leah? I have a deep dark relationship issue that needs analyzed.

What does it say about my relationship with my grandparents when they always sign cards with “love” in quotes? Either they do or they don’t! Which one is it?

I can’t stop wondering if they sign cards to my cousins in the same manner? Do they also get 2 lottery tickets for their birthdays? Not that I’m ungrateful – one of those lottery tickets could be the million dollar winner!

Is this just a case of old people acting kooky and not possessing any punctuation skills, or does it have deeper meaning?

  1. Happy to analyze . . .quotation marks mean that something got said. Your grandparents are conveying that they love you so much that they say if out loud (and, likely, often!)

Are their punctuation skills a bit limited? Hmmm . . .yes.

Is their love for you in any way conditional? No

Do they give identical lottery ticket gifts to all your cousins? Without a doubt.

  2. Me: laughing.

Wow, what a GREAT question. As I read your post, I dove into analyzing your grandparents: Are they from Europe? Say, from Poland? Russia? This sounds quite familiar in my own life…

The truth is, I HAD to read Dr. Leah’s answer right away. Ah, of course! That doctor can call it right. They are simply “saying” how much they love you… as if they’re speaking. I get it. Thanks Dr. Leah.

  3. Dr. Leah – If I told you that I haven’t seen or heard from my grandparents in 2 years (besides the yearly lottery tickets), would that change your analysis?

  4. Single Mom – There’s some discrepancy as to where my grandparents are from, but I believe my Grandma is from Eastern Europe – you may be on to something.

  5. Gee . . .you must miss them. Where do they live? Are they in good health?

  6. Lea – They live about 30 minutes away and I believe they are in relatively good health. My dad stops in to see them often, but my sister and I have little contact with them. They’ve never been the touchy/feely/lovey grandparents that most people have.

  7. Grandparents come in all shapes, sizes, and emotional temperaments. May-be a holiday visit to their house might be a possibility? After all, they “love” you.
