Lexapro and Effexor and Cymbalta – OH MY!

I think I’m running out of options. I’ve tried Lexapro (didn’t notice much of a change in my mood), Effexor (made me clench my jaw), Cymbalta (headaches that  may have been migraines – but I don’t want to be too dramatic) and now Pristiq (makes me sweat like a whore in church). Xanax has been my only constant – and I take that on an as needed basis (which, surprisingly, isn’t as regularly as you may think). I realize that whatever antidepressant I settle on, I’m probably going to have to deal with some mild side effects, but sweating is not one of the side effects I’m willing to embrace in exchange for being perkier.

I know some of you have your hand in the crazy, just like I do – so, tell me what you’re on. What have you tried? What have you had good luck with? What kind of side effects have you endured to get back to your sunshiny self?

Celexa was pretty mild. it’s a p.i.t.a. figuring out what works. Stick with it, good luck!

Hubby has been on Celexa for years. It made him sleepy for a while, but no other issues.

I took Zoloft for four years. I didn’t have any issues.

I also took Wellbutrin for a while. It’s a different class of drug than the others – not an ssri. The good thing about it was how motivated. it makes you. SSRIs are awesome for calming and lifting, but Wellbutrin got me off my butt.

    Depression sucks.

Tina – Yes it does, but it’s getting better – as long as I can find a med without crazy side effects!

LadyGrace – They say that you should give a drug at least a month and then never stop cold turkey. I’ve found that some of my side effects have dissipated after the first two weeks (including the one you mentioned).

I use a combo of things – a huge dose of vitamin B complex works wonders. Evening Primrose Oil is a miracle worker in itself – I use this long with the B. When times are really tough I use LOTS of EPO and I feel like a new person. There are a few other things I know of but haven’t tried myself.

Cymbalta works for me, but I still get depressed once in a while. So I see a counselor to help me sort things out. I sure hope you find something that works. I have heard about a combination of antidepressants too.

i was on effexor for 1.5 years. it took a while for the side effects to subside, which included me sobbing at dinner one night because it hurt too badly to chew, but eventually all was well. it worked the best for me while it worked. but my main reason for taking it was social anxiety, depression was #2. then after about 1.4 years, it made me not give a rat’s ass about anything, so i stopped. tried zoloft, and it didn’t do much of anything for me. now i’m on cymbalta and lyrica (for pain) and i knew one of them gave me some constant head ache, but now i’m also good. you should give them more than a month, because unfortunately, it takes longer than that to adjust.

Connie – My doctor did mention that if my newest medication (Zoloft) doesn’t help that we’ll “have to get creative” which I take to mean a combo of some sort.

Angie – Thanks for commenting. My doctor has been switching my medication every month and I agree that I need to give the medication more of a chance to settle in. I’m now on Zoloft and I think I’m going to give it two months before the follow-up appointment.

I was on Zoloft for 4 years and it just stopped working for me. I am currently on Cymbalta for about 4 months and have a had a constant headache since I started taking it.
