I’m a Riesling
The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. Client meetings, preparing to move from Chicago to Austin, holiday parties – there’s just no rest for the wicked. What I need is a glass of wine and a Xanax to unwind.
Just kidding on the Xanax.
Kinda.
It’s a low dose.
My method of choosing wine based on which bottle has the cutest label hasn’t been the most successful since I don’t like anything that’s in my wine fridge. I’ve poured more wine down the sink that I’ve sipped in the past few months.
Xanax isn’t nearly as enjoyable without a chaser.
The Mirassou Winery offered a much better solution to my wine selection method with a simple quiz to determine my ‘Wine Personality’. Apparently there are seven distinct wine varieties and most people have a favorite.
- Sweet? – Riesling
- Energetic? – Sauvignon Blanc
- Sporty? – Pinot Grigio
- Sunny and Mellow? – Chardonnay
- A person of high standards? – Pinot Noir
- Earthy? – Merlot
- Adventurous? – Cabernet
I pictured myself as a crazy Cabernet or a sophisticated Pinot Noir, but apparently I’m a big squishy, teddy bear of a Riesling. The quiz may not be scientific, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t fully enjoy every last drop of a bottle of Reisling from Mirassou Winery.
My husband did, too – but I always knew he was a big squishy sweet Riesling.
If you’re a miffed about which variety of wine you’d prefer with your favorite muscle relaxer, answer these questions to determine what your ‘wine personality’ is:
- Are you a real sweetheart or big softy?
- Do you prefer sweet tastes over salty ones?
- Do you run circles around your friends because you’re so energetic?
- Are you constantly “on the go”?
- Do you spend most of your free time on the golf course?
- Do you tend to participate in sports rather than watching as a by-stander?
- Is your disposition a happy one?
- Do you “go with the flow”? Have you been described by some as being flexible or “mellow”?
- Are you a perfectionist, never letting go of a project until it’s completely perfect?
- Are you a “Type A” with extremely high standards for yourself and others?
- Are you a nature buff, one who’d rather be out hiking or fishing or out enjoying the natural world?
- Are you concerned for the environment?
- Are you a powerhouse in the workplace who is ready to meet any challenge and sometimes referred to as “adventurous”?
- Do you like to take risks, preferring to try things outside your comfort zone?
- If you answered yes to questions 1 or 2, you are a Riesling
- If you answered yes to questions 3 or 4, you are a Sauvignon Blanc
- If you answered yes to questions 5 or 6, you are a Pinot Grigio
- If you answered yes to questions 7 or 8, you are a Chardonnay
- If you answered yes to questions 9 or 10, you are a Pinot Noir
- If you answered yes to questions 11 or 12, you are a Merlot
- If you answered yes to questions 13 or 14, you are a Cabernet
If you answered yes to more than one question, you may have a drinking problem.
Joking again. Who I am to judge? I’m on Xanax.
It means that you have a sophisticated pallet and would probably enjoy a wide range of varietals. Mirassou can help with sophisticated food and wine pairings to get the most out of your sophisticated pallet – yes, I’m making fun because I want a sophisticated…anything.
Until then, I can now fill my wine fridge with a variety of wine that I know I will enjoy – Riesling!
Mirassou generously sent me a bottle of their exquisite wine to enjoy. Please read my site policy if you have any questions.

Well, not all Riesling are sweet either, they are some mighty good dry ones.
I always thought I was a big cab drinker, but look at me now I make lots of Riesling and enjoying it greatly….

My favourite is sauvignon blanc, but not according to that quiz. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy riesling….

When I was able to drink, I drank a lot of things, but wine wasn’t one of them. Funny, because as a child I drank a small glass every Sunday.
