I blame the meds

I’ve had a cold for going on six days (you can follow my bitching on Twitter at #coldwatch2011) and since a cocktail of antibiotics, decongestants, and antihistamines only has me feeling marginally better while leading to mild hallucinations*, I bring you a random clip from one of my favorite childhood movies.

I remember watching Babes in Toyland frequently as a child, though I suspect it was mostly during the holidays. I always loved the part where Tom Tom pretends to be Floretta the gypsy and tells Mary Contrary “and my breath does reek of salaaaaaaami.”

My mom used to tell my sister and I that she was going to sell us to the gypsies (we pronounced it gippies – but not meaning gay hippie, though I suppose she could have sold us to one of those, too), which should make this movie very traumatic for me, but it doesn’t because she never actually followed through. Obviously.

In a roundabout way, I think this all explains why I stayed up until 3 am watching My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding on Saturday night.

Man, gypsies get a bad wrap. But their fashion sense is ah-mazing.

*I kid. Although I did wake up the middle of the night really mad at something. Maybe it was the gippies.

Mom used to threaten us with being sold to the Gypsies, too. Must be why I watched that video and now want a Traveler wedding, for sure, instead of a Star Trek theme. Way more classy, no?

A traveler wedding is high class. All the way.

Can’t possibly be better than the Klingon ceremony we’re planning. Seriously. I’m ordering ridges for my wedding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OpNWjaI5w

Wait. I just thought you said a traveler wedding is way better! And I don’t know what a Klingon is. (Yes, I’m serious. :-P )

No way I could afford a Traveler wedding.

Klingons are a species in Star Trek with the ridges on their foreheads. My boyfriend costumes up as one for conventions and events. He’s adorable if you’re in to large, intimating, warrior or at least costumed play as such. We’re planning a mock wedding ceremony for a Star Trek convention in April to be in full costume and forehead prosthetics as part of the event schedule. Last year’s was a big hit.

Yes, you can call me crazy. I don’t mind.

I don’t know if I could get that much makeup on my face. I’d be a Traveler wedding fail.

I wonder if Travelers could enter pageants? Miss Traveler would be quite a hoot up on stage! Sure, she’d have to be 15 since she’d start getting over the hill at 16, but it’d sure make for awesome TV.

    Hope you’re feeling better!

My mom often made the gypsy threeat, too. After seeing real gypsies in Europe, I think I’d prefer a gay hippie.

I’ve never seen a real gypsy! My mom was babysitting neighbors when she was in highschool and they surrounded the house trying to get in. She said that there were groups of them knocking on all the doors and she didn’t know where to go first!

And I hope you begin feeling better soon! Being sick is the absolute pits.

I’m looking to see if Babes in Toyland is on Netflix right now. I watched a few clips on YouTube and was surprised by how many of the songs/lines I still remember.

(I’m feeling much better, thank you.)

I thought I was the only one who loved Babes in Toyland. After being weaned on it I tried out for a play of it in middle school and was disappointed to find out there was none of the weirdness of the movie.

The weirdness is what makes it so divine! It’s even weirder now to watch it as an adult.
