Geek-Chic (a guest post)

My coworker, Natalie, blogs at lady chirps a lot, which I adore. So, I crept past her desk and whispered you should totally guest post on my blog all super secret-like, and viola – a blog post appeared in my inbox a week later!

I kind of lucked into being recognizable by my glasses when, you know, my eyesight started failing me in high school. I tried contacts but I just couldn’t get over poking myself in the eye, so glasses 4 eva (a little Fear reference for those of you who were in high school in the 90s). I’m unabashingly thrilled with the current geek-chic trend and equally as thrilled that Natalie chose to write about just that.

Enjoy…

Oh hey there! Corrin (hopefully not jokingly) asked me to write a guest post for her blog, and I was thrilled! But then disaster struck! Disaster in the form of writer’s block. Creepy crawly disgustingly unhelpful writer’s block, the likes of which I hadn’t seen since the Great Prose Drought of ’08 (it was a hard year).

So I decided to write about what I act like I know best: fashion! Fashion + Corrin = sweet arse glasses.

Inspiration:

(From Natalie’s notes, I think a picture of my face is supposed to go here, right next to Buddy Holly, but I don’t want to flatter myself, so Buddy Holly is all you get.)

I LOVE me some geek-chic glasses. When I prop up in bed at night with my Wilkie Collins and my thick Furla lenses I just feel flat-out cool. And when I saw this picture of a real world bride donning her glasses on her big day I totally squee’d:

Right?? Hip, nerdy, and a little defiant, given the stereotypical Updo’d (updone?)  and airbrushed brides wedding magazines throw at you.

A post about glasses isn’t complete without the queen of hip and nerdy, Tina Fey:

I love her. I want to be her. If I buy those glasses will it help me achieve ultimate Fey-dom?

And let’s stick with celeb royalty, shall we? Princess of WTF Badassery, Chloe Sevigny:

She looks surprisingly mainstream in this photo, but don’t let that fool you.  Also, I never knew coral lipstick looked so good with tortoiseshell! Thanks, C-Sev.

And we’ll end with the Czar of the Upper East Side, Ms. Blair Waldorf:

Leighton Meester to me is the modern Rachel Bilson. She’s classically gorgeous so I love how the thick frames seem unexpected on her face. Plus she’s phenomenal on Gossip Girl (definitely the best actor on the show), and I’m not ashamed to admit that I regularly stream GG for that very reason.

And thus ends the ramble! Thanks for letting me put words on your blog, Corrin! Now you’ve learned that I love a) portmanteaus, b) your glasses, and c) turning people into royalty.
