I grew up in a clean house. A very clean house. Danny Tanner clean. There was no 5-second rule. You could eat any meal off of any surface at any given time and the only thought to cross your mind would be if someone could please pass the salt.

We were clean and polite.

And when I say we, I really mean my mom.

Sure, I can identify a plethora of cleaning problems by scent alone and I remember mopping floors and dusting furniture, but I don’t remember having a list of daily chores. I remember my mom cleaning the refrigerator and vacuuming but I don’t remember her in rubber gloves, sensible shoes, and a maid uniform.

She should be impressed that she made it seem so effortless, not that her cleaning prowess wasn’t appreciated.

Our house was always clean because we were taught to clean as you go – and mom was there to clean up after us when that little gem of knowledge slipped our minds.  If you spilled something on the counter, you wiped all the counters down. If you switched clothes from the washer to dryer, you folded the clothes that were in the dryer, you didn’t pile them up for later. If you were vacuuming the hallway rug, you might as well vacuum the whole house while you’re at it.

I was always the one known for leaving a trail of mess behind me (to which I say, my trail of breadcrumbs is nothing compared to my husband’s Sherman-esque trail of destruction), but I think that more of my mom’s cleaning philosophy rubbed off on me than everyone cares to admit. I’m pretty tidy. Maybe not up to Danny Tanner’s standards, but I’d say a solid 10-second rule applies.

Thanks, Mom.

Shelly – I’m so glad someone else appreciates Danny Tanner clean! I think the older I get, the cleaner I get. My current obsession is Clorox wipes. I have them stashed in cabinets all over the house.

I am soo not a Danny Tanner! My creative mind likes to wander. I like to spread out when I do projects. and I’m usually doing at least two projects. However I also strangely like to organize things. Labeled Glass jars make me swoon. Heels lined up just so. Ahhh!

Penney – I love to organize! Labels, binders, drawers and containers make me very happy.
