Check Please with Barack Obama

Mike and I watch Check Please, a PBS show hosted by sommelier Alpana Singh which lets ordinary people review Chicago restaurants, frequently and were excited when we heard of the “lost episode” from 2001 featuring Barack Obama.

Obama reviews Hyde Park haunt Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop, which is surprisingly still open and with multiple locations. I bet they are going to love the burst of publicity!

Anyway, here it is. Enjoy and make your reservation quick!

  1. How interesting! I just saw that on the news. I’ll bet we will be seeing more things about Obama popping up. I can’t wait to see what Michelle Obama wears to the inauguration.

  3. Karen – I’m waiting to see what she wears, too. I usually like what she wears, but I admit that I LOVE the way Cindy McCain dresses. All those simple Channel suits in bold colors. She always looks so classy.

  11. Glad to see he came across pretty much the same as he does now. I’m looking forward to him stepping in this month! I used to live in Chicago before moving west…I lived in Lakeview….around 3300 north. Loved it!

  12. We’re still waiting for him to give our Hawaii business folks a boost when he visits, but so far he mostly just hides out. Imagine what a visit from him would do for some of the local Mom & Pop businesses now!

  17. Maureen – I liked that too. You wonder if he knew then that he was going to run for president one day?

  18. Skeet – I saw video of him in Hawaii walking to the gym and he got mobbed. I think this will be the first celebrity president!

  21. I bet that restaurant is thanking its stars the episode was found. Obama was just in Hawaii over holidays and my friend there was lucky enough to get to meet him in person and his son shook his hand. Talk about a great story for him to tell his friends after break.

  24. Diane – My husband is a paramedic and assisted a German woman visiting the states for the holidays a few weeks ago. Of course, he had to ask her what she thought of the election, and she was elated. She said people in her town were out on the streets celebrating when Obama gave his acceptance speech.

  25. How cool would that be to meet him. Funny thing was my sister was on Oahu on vacation during that time visiting my Aunt. She went down there but missed him. @Diane I believe it. I saw the German people when he visited there during the campaign. He has single handedly restored some of our respect around the world.

  27. Connie – I wish they would have released the entire episode. If you’ve ever seen the show, all three guests pick a restaurant and everyone eats there and gives their opinion.

It is refreshing that he is essentially the same now as he was then.
