This? Right here? Is my morning routine.

Albeit a little late. Unemployment really changes a person’s definition of “morning.”

I get up, use the loo, pour a cup of juice (no coffee here – gives me the jitters), and read my favorite blogs. I don’t use any fancy feed readers or have updates emailed to me. If I like a site, I bookmark it and visit regularly.

I think part of the connection between bloggers and their readers isn’t just the words on the screen; it’s how those words are presented and the intimacy of being able to go to a blogger’s home to read those words. It’s the design, the layout, the photos, the color choices – the complete experience.

Without further ado – here are five blogs that are always in my daily rotation:

Jeremy & Kathleen – They climbed to Mt. Everest Base Camp. For fun. That’s pretty much all you need to know to be hooked, but as a long time reader, I’ll tell you more – Kathleen blogs about fashion, style, food, design, and more – all with photos and images that will make you swoon. She’s a bit kooky, a bit classic, and completely charming.

Hilah Cooking – I love food blogs but honestly, they can get more than a little full of themselves. All those pretentious ingredients and kitchen gadgets nobody has room for. Hilah is having none of that. She’s a hot-mess in the best possible way. She’s smart, witty, uses only simple ingredients, and isn’t afraid to make a mess or add an extra splash of booze.

Cupcakes & Cashmere – Emily is the style director for Beso, but don’t let that scare you off. Her fashion and style posts are classic and accessible, her food posts are simple and beautiful, and she has her own Coach bag. Who can top that?

Design Mom – Before I knew her blog, I met Gabrielle Blair at BlogHer Chicago where she graciously showed me how to screen print tees and bags even though she was almost out of supplies and packing up for the day. Since then, I’ve been whoo-ed by her understated style and soothing tone. She has six of the most fantastically charming children ever and she always responds to comments.

The Bloggess – What list of favorite blogs would be complete without Jenny The Bloggess? I accosted her on the Weinermobile and demanded that she try to save my marriage (for the record, those were two completely separate incidents). I’d ask her to dinner (she lives in the next town over) but that would clearly be crossing the line. She’s honest, hysterical, doesn’t offer any apologies, and is a very good person.

I have a whole list of favorites that I’ll continue to share here and on Twitter, but who would you recommend that I read? Am I missing one of your favorites?

Don’t forget to enter the 50 Fabulous Wishes contest for a chance to win $1,000 to support a friend’s wish. I was selected for this Tropicana Trop50 sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do. I received compensation to use and facilitate my post.

So, I was going about my business, making a triple batch of chocolate chip cookies (plain, Heath, and a third, newfangled variety, marshmallow) when my arm got really tired of mixing and I took a break to tweet this:

Within seconds, someone retweeted me. And someone retweeted them. Then I got my first donation. Then another person said they’d pitch in $5. Then someone requested my PayPal address. Then two people said KitchenAid mixers are life changing and totally worth a donation.

Then the ChipIn button was born.

And cookie-loving angels everywhere bust into song.

If you donate, please leave your contact information so that I can say thank you. The goal is $281 for the KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer that I’ve been coveting by my March 18th birthday. If the kitty doesn’t reach $281, all money will be donated to Feeding America. If it does reach $281, all donations above and beyond will be donated to Feeding America.

Either way, I’ll donate $50 to Feeding America. (More if I can.) Pinkie swear.

To recap: Ya’ll get together and buy me a KitchenAid Stand Mixer for my birthday and a minimum of $50 will be donated to Feeding America.

I know this is completely frivolous and ridiculous. Believe me, I know. But in a good way. It’s worth a shot, right? And maybe we can do a little good, too. You know, besides the copious amount of cookies that will be brought into this world.

Congratulations to Kristin! I can’t wait to get started on your scarf! I love new projects. I hope it’s not a hot mess when I’m done.

I’m starting my New Year with a bit of a break from blogging,  but I wanted to pop in to celebrate my blogovesrary!

Eight glorious years.

In gratitude for your comments, emails, Tweets, inappropriate (and unexpected, but not wholly unwelcome) maulings at various blogging conferences, and for just being you (and, okay, as a not so subtle bribe to keep reading), I thought I’d knit one of you a scarf and treat you to Starbucks!

You pick the color(s), length, width, smooth or nubby, fringe, no fringe, stripes, or no stripes (that’s where your options end, because that’s where my knitting skills end) and I’ll knit it just for you with all the tender-loving-care I can muster.

Oh! Circle scarves! I can knit those, too.

Unless that’s not your thing. In which case, phooey on you. I’ll just send you a Starbucks gift card and you can have a caramel apple cider (my favorite) on me and shiver in the cold.

So, leave a comment and tell a friend. I’ll pick a random winner on January 1st.

Look to the left. See that little Tumblr logo? Did you know that I have a Tumblr blog where I share all the new and exciting things I’m discovering in Texas? Well, I do!

It’s called Welcome to Austin and it was nominated for an Austin Blogger Award for Best Tumblr!

welcome to austin

(I have dozens of photos that I need to share {read: I’m a big fat slacker} so look for lots of updates soon!)

There are so many fantastic bloggers nominated that you’re going to need to clear an afternoon to check them all out and cast your vote for the Austin Blogger Awards, but it will be an afternoon very well spent.

(Especially if you vote for me.)

Sonic for everyone if I win!

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Print24. All opinions are 100% mine. Please see my site policy with any questions.

TA-DA!

After months of changes, tweaks, and general indecisiveness, my new blog design is officially complete! I adore it. Even if it is a touch narcissistic.

Since I’m done obsessing about the design, I’m on to obsessing about other things. Like updating my business cards! Which is why I jumped on the opportunity to try Print24.

I had a designer create my cards to match my blog, so I just had to choose paper stock and quantity and upload my files to Print24. Unfortunately, that was a bit of a challenge given Print24′s website – it’s not very intuitive.

Once I submitted my order, Print24 was excellent about communicating it’s status. From proofing to production to shipping, I knew how close my new business cards were from being in my hot little hands.

My order arrived right on schedule and I was happy as a blogger with a new design could be. The paper stock was nice quality and the printing was sharp. The background color was a little off (more yellow than pale pink – which you can’t see in the photo) but I’m very particular about color matching, so I let it slide.

business card

All-in-all I had a pleasant experience using Print24 and I’m excited to hand my business cards out at the next blogging event.

Pros

  • Excellent communication
  • Reasonably priced
  • Good value
  • Quality materials

Cons

  • Conversion fee*
  • Print colors not quite up to my super picky standards

*One final note: I paid for my order with my PayPal card, and when the transaction processed, I noticed a conversion fee. It was only a few cents, but it did send up a red flat, and I contacted PayPal to verify it was legitimate – which it was. Print24 is a European company, so be aware that you may see a conversion fee on your credit card statement.
