I am reading The Paris Wife by Paula McLain and I think it is lovely. Not surprising since Loving Frank by Nancy Horan was one of my fave books a few years back.
Salted Microwave Caramels. I’ll be making these for Valentine’s Day pressies. (Forget you saw that link, coworkers.)
I want to see Goodbye, First Love. I’m a sucker for romantic dramas in languages I don’t speak that have won awards whose names are surrounded by wheat.
I’ve had a cold for going on six days (you can follow my bitching on Twitter at #coldwatch2011) and since a cocktail of antibiotics, decongestants, and antihistamines only has me feeling marginally better while leading to mild hallucinations*, I bring you a random clip from one of my favorite childhood movies.
I remember watching Babes in Toyland frequently as a child, though I suspect it was mostly during the holidays. I always loved the part where Tom Tom pretends to be Floretta the gypsy and tells Mary Contrary “and my breath does reek of salaaaaaaami.”
My mom used to tell my sister and I that she was going to sell us to the gypsies (we pronounced it gippies – but not meaning gay hippie, though I suppose she could have sold us to one of those, too), which should make this movie very traumatic for me, but it doesn’t because she never actually followed through. Obviously.
In a roundabout way, I think this all explains why I stayed up until 3 am watching My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding on Saturday night.
Man, gypsies get a bad wrap. But their fashion sense is ah-mazing.
*I kid. Although I did wake up the middle of the night really mad at something. Maybe it was the gippies.
Completely unapologetic about who they are and what they love while being absolutely cognizant and accepting of the fact that their personal style may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
If I could adopt a posse of grandmas, I’d choose them.
I’ve had the worst (best?) craving for apple pancakes lately.
Bleubird Vintage blog. I’d never heard of James before meeting her at Texas Style Council but I immediately liked her so I scampered home to check out her blog. She’s cute and sweet, her family is adorable, and I think, deep down, she’s got some snark in her.
I adore Tilda Swinton. I think she’s all kinds of fabulous.
I Am Love premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was screened at Sundance. It opened in the UK this month and the US release date is set for July 18th.
No showtimes are scheduled for Austin thus far, but I am prepared to go to great lengths to see this movie.
Tilda learned Russian and Italian for her part as the matriarch of a Milanese family – the least I can do is drag my husband to the cinema. But knowing Tilda – from afar, of course – there will be boobs at some point in I Am Love, so his efforts will not go unrewarded.
