Bye Bye Bennigans

How many people are actually surprised that corporate owned Bennigans are closing nationwide? Their food was like super-sized TV dinners.

Even though Bennigan’s owners, Metromedia Restaurant Group, denied preparing to file Chapter 7, the rumblings should have been enough of a warning for employees. It’s unfortunate that they were let go so abruptly, and hopefully they will get paid for any outstanding hours, but you have to be observant and try to protect yourself in this economy!

I heard on the news that the top 20 restaurant chains grew by 7% each of the past three years, when the demand only grew by 2% year. Outback Steakhouse and Ruby Tuesday’s, which are also struggling, may not be far behind, so hopefully their employees are beginning to look for other opportunities, because they might not be serving up those over-sized TV dinners for much longer!

So are all the restaurants closing?

  • Daly

I’ve heard of Bennigans but don’t think I’ve seen one. That’s too bad that they filed bankruptcy and released their employees.

I love Outbacks and, come to think of it, we haven’t been there in a while. I didn’t want to go out for dinner tonight but maybe I better before they close their doors. We try to support businesses, especially the mom and pops or new restaurants, because we want to see them succeed. It’s just sad when businesses, any business, has to close its doors…

Daly – restaurant quality is really regional. You’ve the third person that I know in the Vegas area that loves Outback, but in Chicago, they are pretty nasty. We try to go to a lot of smaller restaurants, too. They tend to be cheaper and the food is usually much tastier.

I think if I were in Chicago, there’s a lot of other places I would pick to eat rather than Outback. I bet there’s lots of excellent mom and pops and all those places featured on Food Network is where I’d go.

With so many places to eat out here, if a restaurant can’t cut it in the food department, they won’t last very long. We’ve only gone back to a place twice and never look bad if they’re service or food is horrible. Once we went back three times and we were just asking to be tortured…LOL.

No more Monte Cristos quite like Bennigans makes….

I haven’t been to one in years so I won’t even miss them. I wonder if they didn’t try to keep updating their image over time. Outback is struggling too, huh? Well, people don’t want to spend that kind of money on food these days when you can have a good meal for 1/2 the price somewhere else. I have only eaten there once and it was good but nothing I’d rave about.

I can honestly say I’m not that sad to hear Bennigan’s is closing, but I can say they made a damn good Monte Cristo! Amen, Michelle!

I am probably one of the only people in Oklahoma that will miss Bennigan’s, but I really liked their Turkey O’Toole sandwich.
