Atkins – not just meat, eggs, and cheese anymore!

atkins-logoI’ve been savoring every carb loaded meal and glass of pop since 10 o’clock Tuesday morning. That’s when I decided we are starting Atkins. I decided that we are doing Atkins because I’m the one that does the grocery shopping, and I’m not allowing carbs in the house when I can’t have any.

I was actually very pleased when I checked out the Atkins website. The last time I was on the diet, it consisted of eating as much meat, eggs, and cheese as humanly possible. Now you’re allowed 20 net carbs every day, 12-15 of which are supposed to come from a long list of acceptable veggies!

  • alfalfa sprouts
  • chives
  • cucumber
  • lettuce
  • mushrooms
  • artichoke
  • asparagus
  • avocados
  • broccoli
  • brussel sprouts
  • cabbage
  • cauliflower
  • eggplant
  • olives
  • onion
  • sauerkraut
  • peas
  • spaghetti squash
  • spinach
  • tomato
  • water chestnuts
  • zucchini

I was also excited to see that there are some great recipes. That means we won’t just be eating steaks and salads every night. There’s side dishes, casseroles, soups, and snacks that I would eat even if I wasn’t on the diet.

I’m pretty excited to get started. We’re headed to Costco this weekend to stock up and the official weigh-in will be on Monday. I’m not divulging what my starting weight is or how much I need to loose, but I’ll give periodic progress reports.

Until the weight starts melting off…Have you tried Atkins? Did it work for you? How much did you lose? Any special recipes you’d recommend?

  2. When Mike was first diagnosed with diabetes, the doc said he had to lose weight. We went on Atkins. In 6 months he lost 40#. I gained 14#. But it has been 10 years and Mike has kept the weight off. We are, of course, no longer on Atkins. In fact, Mike has a hard time staying away from sweets. Not so tough for me. I have always preferred meat and veggies but not fruit( except grapefruit). I have lost 65# in the past 12 months. No real diet; just gave up pop and changed our meal schedule. It can be done. Like they say–don’t think of it as a diet but a life change.
Good luck, girlfriend. You can do anything you put your mind to.

  5. I mostly eat vegetarian now and really focus on eating as many whole foods as possible- that and exercise combined works for me (unless I’m craving Cherry Pie). However, I have done Atkins and Protein Power about 10 years ago. It does work- and you don’t get really hungry. I just felt funny about not eating fruit and taking in so much fat. But it did work and was easy for a traveling business person to do versus other types of plans! Good Luck!

  7. Protein is always good for you, and carbs are bad, but the simple fact that they say vegetable carbs and fruit carbs are bad bothers me a little. I couldn’t do it. SugarBusters is a diet similar to Atkins, but easier to follow, in my opinion. I did it several years ago and lost 70 pounds. Of course, sense then I gained 40 of it back, which is way I have my blog and website now! :)

Good luck to you! Please let me know how you’re doing. Being in the weight loss business myself, I’ll be interested to know. ;)

  11. Thanks, Karen. We stocked up at Costco today and I divided lots of food into individual servings so convenience can’t be an excuse!

  12. Linda – We’ve cut out pop, which has helped a lot. We only have a glass when we go out to dinner.

  13. LadyGrace – Thanks. Some of those recipes do look good, don’t they!

  14. Cady – We love red meat in our house, though we don’t eat it often, so this is going to be quite a change for us. Carbs are out downfall!

  15. Maureen – I’m glad to hear you’ve stuck to some of the plan over the years. That’s exactly what we’re looking for. Something we can stick with and carry over into a normal diet.

  16. Sam & Tigger – Thanks so much. This may be the first time we’re looking forward to starting a diet!

  17. Heh, heh… I like the way you include your husband since you’re buying the groceries – and probably doing the cooking :) It’s good to tackle this together so you can keep your eye on each other!

Atkins sounds great now that they’ve included all those vegetables. I find it so difficult to give up the carbs… I LOVE bread and desserts… but this sounds almost doable :)

Best of luck to you both.

  18. Sadie – That’s the change, they are saying that fruit/veggie carbs ARE good for you, as long as they are in moderation and from the right fruits and veggies. I think it is more the sugar content than the carbs, actually.

  19. Laurie – Thanks…it’s gotta be easier than MediFast!

  20. Christina – I’m hoping Atkins phases well into a balanced diet. The plan makes a lot of sense and you work to find the right carb level for your diet.

  21. Julie – I always assumed that I wouldn’t like brussel sprouts, but I tried them for the first time about a year ago, and I love them!

    [Reply]

  22. Heather – About two years ago, Mike and I lost 50 lbs. each on MediFast, so I know doing this together will help. I think the diet sounds really reasonable. Our biggest hurdle will be preparing the meals, especially since Mike works 24 hour shifts.

Thanks for the tips on the “strike-through”. I have already put it into play, and also already admitted that I will be using it too frequently. It’s like I can say what I’m REALLY thinking!

  28. Steph – Willpower is what we’ve been missing. We can do anything if we’re in the right frame of mind, and I think we’re fed up with being chubby. Haha.

  30. I’ve done Atkins before and it really does work. The problem was I strayed off it (actually quit smoking) right after I’d lost the 25 lbs (and quitting smoking didn’t help). In the process, I also messed up my taste buds, I was drinking a lot of the protein/vitamin drinks of my own creation using their products. So… now I’m just counting calories and watching what I eat.

However, for all the nay saying you might hear about Atkins, reading up on it first is critical. It makes perfect sense, though it is not for everyone.

    Happy New Year!

  35. I have not tried the Atkins diet and really I can’t as being diabetic I need more carbs then what they allow. I do like though that you get more choices then you use to. My sister tried it and couldn’t stand it. Of course she doesn’t like meat so that could be part of it.
