I just want to make a quick serious post about what Kathy Sierra has been going through lately. Her most recent blog post describing what has transpired against her in the blogosphere in the past few weeks will make you physically ill. Especially if you are a blogger. She’s gotten numerous threats including throat slitting, hanging, suffocation, sex acts, photoshopped pictures, and comments on her own website and other forums…just because she blogs.

It’s all very vile and it makes me think twice about blogging and what I post on my sites. It also makes you think about the types of comments you leave on other sites and the seriousness of the comments left on your own sites. What some people think of as harmless fun or being a smartass really crosses the line sometimes, and there’s no telling when those comments will turn into actions.

People develop a false sense of bravado over the internet very quickly and write things to and about people that they would never say to that person’s face. If you wouldn’t say it out-loud, don’t type it.

Scoble is taking the week off from blogging in support of Kathy, and I think that makes for a great opportunity for some real life discussion about the impliations of the turn the blogosphere has recently taken.
